The prospect of hosting the Olympics has divided opinion in the Spanish regions, especially since the pro-independence Catalan government did not want to include Aragon in its candidacy due to political controversy.

Spain will not ultimately apply to host the Winter 2030 Olympic Games in the Pyreneesdue to political differences between their governments regions of Catalonia and Aragonannounced today the president of the Olympic Committee of Spain, Alejandro Blanco.

The prospect of hosting the Olympics has divided public opinion in the Spanish regions, especially since the pro-independence Catalan government did not want to include Aragon in the candidacy due to political controversy.

Activists have also warned that the Games could have a negative impact on the Pyrenees due to climate change.

“We had other brilliant candidacies (for the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics) that did not advance because we were competing with very strong rival cities. “But we destroyed it in our own house,” Blanco told a news conference, adding: “There was no other way out than withdrawing our candidacy. We can not spend months and months and months with the differences that existed. “We were transforming a project of completion into a war between constitutionalists and independents, the Olympic spirit is not about that.”

The Japanese city of Sapporo is considered the Olympic favorite, with the former “hosts” of the Winter Games, Vancouver in Canada and Salt Lake City in the United States, also interested.
