A team of researchers from the US National Transportation Security Administration (NTSB) was on the scene yesterday, the federal agency announced. The black boxes of the MD-82 have been recovered and will be studied. The researchers, who have already discussed with the airport rescue teams, will be able to enter the aircraft after first emptying of the remaining fuel.

“The aircraft crashed into its left main landing gear on arrival at runway 9, derailed and stalled in a grassy area,” the NTSB said. A fire broke out “on the right side” of the plane, the service added in a statement.

“Three injured people were taken to nearby hospitals,” the Miami Fire Department said earlier, adding that it “reduced fuel leaks.”

Flight L5-203 “encountered technical difficulties” during landing, around 17:45 (local time; around 00:45 Greek time), said in a press release uploaded to Twitter by Red Air, a small low-cost flight company that started operating in November in the Dominican Republic.

He clarified that the 130 passengers and 10 members of the crew were hurriedly removed from the plane.
