The consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine for the global supply chain are being discussed at the International Conference on Food Security in Berlin.
A conference on World Food Security focusing on the global consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine is being held in the German capital on Friday. This is an initiative of the German government and specifically of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Development and Agriculture in the context of the G7 Summit in Elmau, Bavaria (June 26-28).
Hunger has always been a challenge for the international community, said Foreign Minister Analena Berbok, but Russia’s offensive war gives a new dimension, causing a “tsunami” of consequences.
Russia is blocking Ukrainian ports, destroying silos and grain warehouses, and blaming Western sanctions for the new global grain crisis, Burbok said, stressing the consequences of the threatening food crisis, mainly for African countries, which depend exclusively on Ukraine. cheap ukrainian sunflower oil.
“It will be a marathon”
“Putin clearly uses hunger as a weapon” and that is why Analena Berbok proposes the following axes for the Conference and the forthcoming G7: Accelerating Ukrainian grain exports, finding alternative routes for transporting grain, for example, through Romania, and providing food aid to those affected.
“It will be a marathon,” said Analena Berbock. For her part, Development Minister Svenya Schulze spoke of the threat of the biggest wave of famine since World War II, stressing that not only energy but also food dependence on Russia must end.
And German Agriculture Minister Cem Etzdemir stressed the need to switch to sustainable production methods to accelerate this detoxification. Finally, it is worth noting that in the press conference, reference was made to the special role of Turkey as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine in the search for solutions to the unblocking of the grain from the Black Sea.
