US gun lobby hits bill to reduce gun violence

The bill will now be sent to President Joe Biden for ratification.

The lobby of the gun ownership in the USA was hit today, Friday, as the House of Representatives approved a cross-party bill aimed at curbing firearms crimes for the first time in almost 30 years.

The bill will now be sent to President Joe Biden for ratification.

The bill passed the Parliament with 234 votes in favor against 193 against.

No Democrats voted against it, while 14 Republicans backed it, a rare defeat for the US arms industry and the powerful lobby for NRA gun ownership.

Late Thursday night, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 65 to 33, with 15 Republicans voting in favor – including the minority leader, Mitch McConnell.

The bill focuses mainly on the implementation of the current legislation per State that allows weapons to be removed from people who are considered dangerous to themselves or society. It also provides for stricter verification of the criminal record and psychological history of would-be arms buyers aged 18 to 21, stricter crackdowns on illegal arms sales, and mental health programs.

The May 24 killing of 19 students and two teachers at Ovalde, Texas Elementary School appears to have provoked a backlash from a small group of senators that led to the bill.
