Tens of thousands of people gathered yesterday, Friday, June 24, in the capital of Georgia Τπιλισι with a request for their country’s accession to the EU.
The demonstration this was done after the grant by the EU leaders to Ukraine and Moldova Georgia’s candidate status, while Georgia was given the prospect of formally becoming a candidate country at the European Summit as soon as it completes reforms.
The protesters also demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, claiming that his government had not adequately promoted Georgia ‘s efforts to gain EU candidate status, Georgian media reported.
Protest organizers outside parliament called for a transitional government.
«If the government does not want to hear the wishes of the Georgian people, we will (…) show them the wrath of the Georgian people, as they have never seen it before.“, Said a speaker at the demonstration.
Georgia applied in Brussels in March for EU candidate status, which Garibashvili described as a “milestone” on the country’s path to European integration.
