Brazilian President Zaich Bolsonaro said Sunday that he expects to officially announce within days that his former defense minister, retired General Walter Braga Neto, will run for vice president on his ballot in October.

The far-right head of state, who will run for a second term in the autumn, is well behind left-wing former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in opinion polls.

The general e.a. Braga Neto served as general secretary of the presidency from February 2020 to March 2021, before taking over the portfolio of the Ministry of Defense, which he left earlier this year.

“He is someone I admire a lot and he will help Brazil a lot in the coming years if we are re-elected,” Bolsonaro said in an interview.

The Brazilian president recently hinted at the possibility of naming Teresa Cristina Jia as his “vice-presidential candidate”, an “excellent name” in Brazilian politics, but according to him, he added, “only” one vice-presidential candidate fits on the ballot.

The current vice-president of Brazil, Hamilton Mouraou, also a retired general, is expected to claim a seat in the Senate, after a series of his counterattacks with Zaich Bolsonaro, which were widely covered by the media.
