A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a stranger during a “terrible” street attack in east London.

Police this afternoon named the victim Zara Aliena, 36, who lived there in Ilford.

The attacker attacked Cranbrook Road after noon on June 26, while walking towards Ganzhill station.

Arena died in hospital after being found injured on the street.

In a statement, Chief Foreman Stuart Bell, Senior Foreman for the Eastern District, said:

“His family is aware of this and as the investigation progresses they will pick it up and continue to support him.

He added that there was no evidence that the weapon was used in the attack, resulting in a fatal injury to Mr. Arena.

“Our priority is to catch the criminal as soon as possible, so there are certain aspects of the investigation that we do not discuss in detail,” he said.

“Additional information will be provided and made available to the media and the public as soon as possible.

“We inform Zara’s family of our progress and express our deepest condolences during this difficult time.

“They are backed by professional officers, but I can’t imagine the pain they are experiencing.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was traumatized by the Zara Arena death.

He said in a statement:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and the entire community devastated by his death.

“I am in regular contact with the police, who work 24 hours a day, and the suspected killer has been arrested.

“A large number of police officers will continue to be in the area for the next few days.

“It is understandable that women in this region and across London are experiencing oppression and horror following this horrific attack and the death of another woman at the hands of a man.”

Police responded to the scene at 2:44 am on Sunday after critically injured civilians were found on Arena Street.

The ambulance doctor responded and tried to help her, but could not save her.

The investigation revealed that Zara suffered multiple serious injuries and died.

Police said they were conducting a full and on-site forensic investigation of the scene and the surrounding area.

They also monitor the CCTV available in the area and tell locals to expect a significant police presence in the coming days and weeks.

Chf Supt Bell previously said that the women would be “terrible attacks”.

He continued. “Women need to be able to work to feel safe, day and night, without having to change their behaviour.

“It’s our job to make sure of that, but executives can’t be anywhere at any time.

“I urge our community, especially women, to report suspicious or unwanted behavior and seek help if you feel threatened.”
