The Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg referred to the agreement with Turkey enabling Sweden and Finland to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
According to the secretary-general, Ankara, Helsinki and Stockholm have signed a memorandum addressing concerns expressed by Turkey, including arms exports and the fight against terrorism.
“I am pleased to announce that we have an agreement that paves the way for Finland and Sweden to join NATO,” Stoltenberg told reporters.
NATO countries have always been able to find “common ground” and resolve their differences, Stoltenberg said. Following the agreement, NATO will “invite” Sweden and Finland to join, he added.
For its part, Turkey says, among other things, that the three countries have agreed to intensify their co-operation in the defense industry and to lift any restrictions. They will also set up an information sharing mechanism to fight terrorism.
