The rest of NATO leaders will be called upon to invest more money in modernizing their countries’ defenses and restoring their ability to prevent attacks in Europe. Boris Johnson on the first full day of the Madrid Summit today.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom will warn that the next decade is likely to be “more dangerous and competitive” than the previous one.

Mr. Johnson is expected to note that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has “crushed” peace in Europe and has permanently reshaped the geopolitical outline of the continent. Therefore, there should be long-term investment, but also ensuring the ability to respond to crises and emergencies, he noted.

It is estimated that this year the British government’s defense spending will reach 2.3% of GDP.

In addition, the British Prime Minister will announce in Madrid an increase in the military presence and strengthening of the operational capacity of his country in Estonia.

Speaking at the plenary session, Boris Johnson is expected to say: “The NATO Alliance keeps our people safe every day. But for the next ten years the threats around us will only grow. We need all allies to dig deep to restore deterrence capability and secure defense for the next decade. “2% (of defense spending as a percentage of GDP) has always been for the floor, not the ceiling, and the allies must continue to step up their efforts in this time of crisis.”

The British Prime Minister is expected to have a series of contacts with other leaders on the sidelines of the summit, such as the Greek Prime Minister Kyriako Mitsotakibut also with the leaders Turkey, Sweden and Φινλανδίας.

Early in the morning he had a meeting with the new Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanesewith whom they discussed the need for continued support for Ukraine and the AUKUS military pact between their countries and the United States.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the German television network ZDF, Mr. Johnson said that if Putin was a womanthe invasion of Ukraine would not have taken place.

“If she was a woman, who obviously is not, but if she were, I really do not think she would have started a crazy, bunch of war of invasion and violence as she has done. “If you want a perfect example of toxic masculinity, that’s what it does in Ukraine.”
