“What was agreed was written on paper”: Finland’s no change in legislation stays in Turkey

by

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Finland and Sweden to “fulfill the promises” made to Turkey.

At the time that Tayyip Erdogan Calls on Finland and Sweden to “fulfill the promises” made to Turkey, the Finnish Government insists that it does not intend to change its legislation, no such thing arises under the Madrid agreement!

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Peka Haavisto stressed to the Finnish agency Yle on Friday morning that no changes were agreed in the Finnish legislation during the signing of a tripartite memorandum between Turkey, Finland and Sweden in Madrid on Tuesday.

With the signing of the memorandum, Turkey pledged to support the Nordic countries’ applications to NATO, but the Turkish president said his country could not ratify Finland and Sweden’s application for membership in the military alliance unless the countries keep their promises.

Erdogan calls for changes in terrorism legislation of both Nordic countries, as well as extradition to Turkey about 33 terrorism suspects, and referred to the tripartite agreement signed between the three countries, as well as to the talks that took place during the negotiations.

However, while acknowledging that different views could be expressed, Haavisto made it clear that only what was reflected in the agreement document would be respected. “Everything that was agreed was written on paper”said the Finnish Foreign Minister to Yle.

He also noted that Finland and Sweden had to be careful during Tuesday’s talks in order to avoid promising anything on the part of their legislatures or parliaments.

Next Monday, Finland and Sweden will begin their NATO accession talks, followed by NATO member states, including Turkey, will have to sign the accession protocol of the two Nordic countries.

Validation will take place in due course, therefore there is still a “long way”clarified Haavisto.
