Six are confirmed dead and 24 injured have been taken to hospitals after shootings during the suburb’s Fourth of July parade Chicago’s Highland Parkaccording to the latest official information.

Based on the description provided by authorities, the suspect is white, aged 18-20 years and is considered “armed and dangerous.” According to a police spokesman, a rifle has been found and is being examined.

Its mayor Highland Park urged all citizens to stay inside their homes, call their people and make sure they are safe.

Several federal agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the investigation. Police have asked citizens who have video footage of the shooting to provide it to authorities.

“Multiple law enforcement officers responded and have secured a perimeter around downtown Highland Park,” the city said.

According to reports in the US media, citing eyewitnesses, the shots appeared to come from an adjacent building, from the roof or from an apartment on the upper floors.

The police have launched a manhunt to locate the perpetrator(s).

A security source told Fox 32 television that there is one dead and many injured. The same information, about a dead person, was broadcast by the television network WGN TV.

A CBS-2 producer at the scene, Elisa Kaufman, said “everyone was running, hiding and screaming.”

“People were yelling there’s a shooter,” Highland Park resident Debbie Glickman told The Associated Press. “So we started running. We just ran. It was chaos over there.” However, Glickman said she did not hear any noise or see anyone injured.

Brad Snyder, who represents the State of Illinois in the House of Representatives, was in this city, on the shores of Lake Michigan, when the shots were heard. “My campaign team members and I had just met for the start of the parade when the shooting started,” he tweeted.
