Javid’s resignation was officially announced by the government – Sunak’s resignation via Twitter
Their resignation was announced late this afternoon by the Minister of Finance Rishi Sunak and the Minister of Health Sajid Javidplunging Boris Johnson’s government into crisis.
Javid said he had lost confidence in Johnson’s ability to govern in the national interest after a series of scandals, saying he “can no longer carry on in good conscience”.
He added that many MPs and the public had lost confidence in Johnson’s ability to govern in the national interest.
“I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership – and therefore you have lost my confidence as well,” Javid said in a letter to Johnson.
For his part, Sunak, in a letter he posted on Twitter, announcing his resignation from the post of finance minister, said that he took the decision with hesitation, saying characteristically: “we cannot continue like this”.
“It became clear to me that our approaches are fundamentally very different,” Sunak said in his letter to Johnson.
