Analena Berbock: Germany’s first female foreign minister

by

After 16 years of a woman, Angela Merkel, in the chancellery her successor will be a man, the Social Democrat Olaf Soltz. Analena Berbock, co-chair of the Greens, will not be the next chancellor, but she will be the first woman to lead German diplomacy at the helm of the Foreign Ministry. She will also be the youngest minister in this post: on December 15 she turns 41 years old.

Her first priority at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not be other than climate protection, which for her, as she has repeatedly said, is a matter of foreign policy. As he said, climate and foreign policy are interrelated, because climate protection can only be achieved at the international level.

She stated characteristically during the presentation of the agreement for the formation of the government: “With the joint plan that we present for the formation of the coalition government, we are preparing the way to face the biggest crisis of our time, the climate crisis. “As one of the largest industrialized nations in the world, our goal is to become climate neutral, in cooperation with our European neighbors and friends.”

“Europe to take its peace role seriously”

In addition to climate change, Burbock intends to pursue a foreign policy toward Russia and China, two of the world’s most powerful economies, more human rights-oriented.

As for Germany’s relationship with the United States, which has been hit hard by Donald Trump’s presidency, it is expected that Burbock will follow in the footsteps of new President Joe Biden on crucial issues in international politics such as Beijing. It is also a fact that Burbok has traditionally been in favor of withdrawing US nuclear weapons from Germany and rejecting the US request for an increase in defense spending.

As for the European Union, for years Analena Berbock has been advocating for the EU to take on greater international responsibility, especially in the field of security policy. He says the EU should take its “peacekeeping role” in the world seriously. As he characteristically said, the coalition agreement “calls for a real foreign policy, a real security and defense policy in Europe”, considering, among other things, that the armed forces of European countries should work more closely together.
