A special reference to Lesvos, “in the sources of humanity” as the island typically calls it, was the message of Pope Francis in view of his visit to the island next Sunday, December 5th.
“But I think,” says the Pontiff, “and those who in recent years, even today, want to escape war and poverty, reach the shores of the European continent and elsewhere, and find no hospitality but hostility and become objects of instrumentalism.” They are our brothers and sisters. How many lost their lives at sea! Today “our sea”, the Mediterranean, is a large cemetery. As a pilgrim to the sources of humanity, I will go to Lesvos again, believing that the sources of common life will become prosperous again only through brotherhood and social inclusion: together. There is no other way, and with this desire I come to you “.
In the meantime, the works continue intensively so that in the camp of the temporary structure of Kara Tepe at 10.45 on the morning of Sunday, December 5 – when Lesvos will be the center of global interest – everything is ready. Characteristic of this interest is that hundreds of people from all over the world among them and many dozens of journalists will gather in Mytilene. In fact, the hotels and apartments through the AirBNB of the area have for those days occupancy of 100%.
In Kara Tepe, the necessary configuration works are being completed in order to set up two tents. One of which the Pope will address to the whole world and where representatives of the Greek State, the Papal Church in Greece and Lesvos and the community of Catholic refugees living in Kara Tepe, from which the Pope will speak, will speak for a few minutes. Pope will receive a gift made by her children. Then in the second tent the Pope will see refugees on the way back to the airport.
The President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the European Commissioner Margaritis Schoinas, and the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis, will be present in Kara Tepe during the Pope’s visit.
