After the back shot he received while delivering a speech in the western city of Nara, he breathed his last, state broadcaster NHK reported.

From the first moment it had been known that Abe’s condition was very critical, as he had not no vital signs and was in a state of “cardiopulmonary arrest” when the ambulance took him to the hospital.
The perpetrator was arrested by the police. He is a 42-year-old man.

The former head of government was giving a speech ahead of Sunday’s Senate election when he was shot, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK and the Kyodo news agency.
Abe served as Japan’s prime minister longer than anyone else (2006-2007, 2012-2020).

The US ambassador expresses “sadness” and “shock”.
The US ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, today expressed his “sadness”, adding that he was “shocked” by the attack by a gunman on former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his campaign speech.
“We are all saddened and shocked by the bullet attack on former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. Abe-san has been an outstanding leader of Japan and a staunch ally of the US. The American government and the American people pray for the well-being of Abe-san, his family and the Japanese people,” Mr. Emanuel said in a press release he released.
