A police investigation has ruled that Britain’s main opposition Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer did not break lockdown rules during a party rally in Durham in April 2021.
The local police department has been investigating the so-called ‘beergate’, i.e. whether the takeaway meal and beers for around 20 people ordered at the party’s offices in Durham at the end of a by-election meeting was a breach of the rules in place due to pandemic.
Sir Kiir had said that if he was fined by the police he would resign, unlike Prime Minister Boris Johnson who was fined by London’s Metropolitan Police over partygate.
Following the dismissal of Mr Starmer, as well as deputy party leader Angela Rayner who was present at the party meeting, a Labor spokesman said both “were clear from the start that no rules had been broken in Durham”.
The local police department announced that after an extensive investigation it was determined that “there was nothing reprehensible about the violation of the regulations”, as it was a gathering for the purpose of “necessary work”, which was allowed by the rules.
“As a result, Durham Constabulary will not issue any monetary fines in relation to the gathering and no further action will be taken,” the police statement added.
