German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock is visiting Tokyo today, wrapping up her Asia tour with her first official visit to Japan, which has been overshadowed by the shock of the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Ms Burbock, who will meet her Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi, is visiting the archipelago three twenty-four hours after the former Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) prime minister was assassinated during a campaign speech in Nara (west).
A vigil is planned tonight for Shinzo Abe, who will be buried tomorrow, according to Japanese media.
Ms. Burbock is expected to discuss bilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and in particular relations with China.
Japan, a member of the G7, whose rotating presidency is currently held by Germany, has also been actively participating in the consultations on Russia’s war against Ukraine since the end of February.
Ms Burbock will visit a Japanese naval base in the afternoon and also plans to visit the US 7th Fleet base in Yokosuka, where she will be welcomed by its commander, Vice Admiral Carl Thomas.
