EU: Airlines refund over 500,000 vouchers

This development is a product of the dialogue held by the Commission and the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC Network) in 2021 to address the consequences of the massive and unprecedented flight cancellations that occurred in the early stages of the pandemic.

The Commission and national consumer protection authorities have just received confirmation from 16 major European airlines that they have refunded more than 500,000 vouchers they had issued to consumers for canceled flights during the coronavirus pandemic.

This development is a product of the dialogue held by the Commission and the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC Network) in 2021 to address the consequences of the massive and unprecedented flight cancellations that occurred in the early stages of the pandemic.

As part of the 2021 dialogue, airlines pledged to take steps to align their practices with EU consumer and passenger rights law.

Commitments include:

The clearing of late refunds and the timely refund of passengers’ money
Better informing consumers about rights related to cancellations
Offering consumers the option of exchanging coupons for money in all cases where coupons were previously imposed on them.
