The warning of the temporary director of the Coast Guard and Border Guard Service Frontex Ayia Kalnaya.

The European Union must prepare for the arrival new waves of refugees driven by the food crisis, which is being exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, the interim director of the Frontex coastguard and border agency warned today Ayia Kalnaya.

The official emphasized that the EU is “well prepared for refugees coming from Ukraine”.

“At the same time, we also need to prepare for refugees coming from other areas due to food insecurity,” she told reporters while attending the Council of European Home Affairs Ministers in Prague.

“You know that wheat transportation from Ukraine is being hindered. And this will create waves of immigration. So, we are preparing for that,” she said.

Ukraine, one of the world’s biggest grain exporters, has seen its production blocked by Moscow’s military offensive. About 20 tons of grain from last year’s harvest are blocked in Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea.

The situation has worsened since price jump in the international markets and the food crisis that threatens major customers of Ukraine, mainly the countries of Africa and the Middle East.
