Four people were stabbed by police outside a hospital in Shanghai.

At 11:30 local time on Saturday, police were called in for an attack in the city’s Huangpu district.

Police officers found a man in a hospital who was being held hostage by a mob. They fired when he threatened to hurt them.

The statement reads: “Police responded to the scene and found a man holding a group of hostages at Knife Point, on the seventh floor of the hospital.

“When the suspect stabbed the hostage and tried to punish the police, the police wounded him and fired decisively to suppress him.”

The four stabbed have injuries that are not life-threatening and are being treated at a hospital. The motive of the attacker is unknown.

Chinese media showed video footage of armed police officers trying to break into a locked room.
