As the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said earlier, Ukraine is “two steps away” from a deal with Russia for the export of Ukrainian grain to international markets.
According to diplomats, the plan that was to be discussed provides that Ukrainian ships to ferry cargo in and out of mined ports; Russia to declare cease-fire on ship movements; and that Turkey – with the support of the United Nations – would inspect the trucks to assuage Russian concerns about arms smuggling.
Ukraine also noted that grain exports increase despite the blockade of its Black Sea ports, as some of its ships now move through the Danube.
It is noted that both Ukraine and Russia are major suppliers of grain internationally. Russia also tops the world rankings for fertilizer exports, while Ukraine is a major producer of corn and sunflower oil.
The Russian military invasion and naval blockade in the Black Sea have effectively halted exports, blocking dozens of ships and over 20 tons of grain in silos in Odessa.
The upcoming crop is also at risk as Ukraine is short of storage space due to the halt in exports.
