New Zealand has been ranked as the second worst place in the world for migrants to move to, according to a survey.

As the “Guardian” newspaper writes, the expatriate networking organization “InterNations” conducted research on almost 12,000 respondents 177 different nationalitieswho live in 181 Countries. Participants were asked about quality of life, costs, safety, economic prospects, bureaucracy and ease of adjustment in their new homelands.

In the resulting ranking of 52 countries, for which the sample was large enough, New Zealand ranked 51st place. The last place was occupied by Kuwait. Australia was ranked ninth best overall.

New Zealand’s poor ranking is perhaps somewhat surprising. During the pandemic, some of its cities have been rated as the most livable in the world, and the phrase “I’m moving to New Zealand” has become a common refrain among Americans unhappy with their country’s political outlook.

The poor image of the country was attributed to the lower wages and high cost of living. New Zealand was the worst performing country in the survey’s measure of personal finances: 49% of respondents said their household disposable income was not enough to live comfortably, compared to 28% globally. For the general cost of living, 75% rated the country negatively, compared to 35% globally.

New Zealand also ranks below global averages for respondents who feel they are paid fairly for their work, see a purpose in their work or like their working hours.

Her greatest asset was the outdoors. Environment and climate was the only metric in which New Zealand ranked in the top half of countries. Its natural environment was loved by 95% of arrivals, compared to 83% globally and for recreational sports opportunities it ranked first with 84%, compared to 75% elsewhere.

Mexico ranked first in the survey, with particularly high scores for personal finances and ease of settling. The top five are completed by Indonesia, Taiwan, Portugal and Spain.
