Mattarella does not accept Draghi’s resignation

A political thriller has been going on for the last few hours in Italy with the country’s President Sergio Mattarella refusing to accept Mario Draghi’s resignation.

After telling his ministers that he had decided to resign, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi returned to the Cyrillic palace to officially announce the president of the republic, Sergio Mattarella, of his decision.

The Italian president, however, did not accept the resignation and asked Draghi to appear before the parliament, to ascertain whether he has the confidence of the parliament.

Next Wednesday, Draghi will address the House and the Senate, and then a new vote of confidence is expected.

Mario Draghi’s government earlier received a vote of confidence from Rome’s Senate, which also approved the latest economic measures to support citizens and businesses.

The Five Star Movement, however, as it had announced, did not take part in the vote. In total, 172 senators expressed confidence in the government of the technocrat prime minister, out of a total of 315. The “five-star” senators did not enter the Senate chamber during the vote.

The cabinet meeting was postponed and Draghi went to the presidential palace to meet with the president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, the Italian president emphatically asked Draghi to remain in his post, albeit with the support of a smaller parliamentary majority.
