According to the authorities, the attacker launched the attack at the particular store because it was crowded and in a neighborhood where mostly African Americans live.
A federal judge today indicted 19-year-old Peyton Gendron, who shot and killed 10 African-Americans and wounded three others last May at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket, accusing him of being racially motivated, the United States Department of Justice said.
The 19-year-old was charged with 27 hate crimes and gun violations in the US. announced the Ministry of Justice.
According to the authorities, the attacker launched the attack at the particular store because it was crowded and in a neighborhood where mostly African Americans live.
The indictment was announced about an hour before a gathering planned by local community members at the site of the massacre to pay tribute to the victims, marking the two-month anniversary of the May 14 attack.
The supermarket, which has since been fully renovated, is expected to reopen tomorrow, Friday.
Ten days after the massacre, another bloodbath came to shock American public opinion. This time, it took place at a school in the Uvalde community in Texas, where 19 children and two teachers lost their lives. Seven weeks after the massacre in Buffalo, seven people were killed in a US Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois.
The back-to-back gun attacks have reignited the years-long debate about the need to limit gun ownership in the United States.
Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo, said the reopening of the supermarket where the massacre took place is an important step for the community trying to heal its wounds. “It is important that we move forward as a united and strong community. We will not allow hatred to win,” he stressed.
