Bills passed only by Democrats – The first legalizes abortion at the federal level and the second provides protections for women who choose that path – Needs 10 Republican votes to pass and activate
THE House of Representatives passed today, with only Democratic votes, two bills aimed at providing protections for women who wish to abortionafter the decision of the Supreme Court which overturned the jurisprudence in force until recently.
The two bills have no chance of passing Senate.
“Just three weeks ago, the Supreme Court dealt a severe blow to our fundamental rights,” said the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. “That’s why (…) we will take new measures to defend women’s freedom in the matter of reproduction,” he added shortly before the vote began, surrounded by MPs dressed in green, the color of the pro-abortion movement.
The first of the bills legalizes abortion again at the federal level. The second provides protection for women who travel from one State to another to have an abortion.
To pass that Senate, the two bills would need the votes of 60 senators, meaning Democrats need the votes of at least 10 Republicans.
After the Supreme Court decision, many States have already banned abortions on their territory. President Joe Biden urged Americans to mobilize in November’s midterm elections and give Democrats a large majority in the Senate to pass bills that would protect this right for women. But almost always in mid-term elections the ruling party records losses. It is therefore possible that the Democrats will lose even the marginal majority they currently have in the Senate.
