An… ingenious way to deal with shortages due to the war in Ukraine
A Munich beer hall has come up with an innovative way to deal with them cooking oil shortages in Europe: allows its customers to pay for their beer with… sunflower oil to ensure it has enough stock to fry the schnitzels.
As Ukraine and Russia together have 80% of the world’s of sunflower oil exports, many European countries, including Germany, saw their stockpiles plummet after the Russian invasion of the neighboring country in February. The managers of the brewery-brewery Giesinger Brewery believe they have found the solution to the problem. They offer beer lovers a liter of their favorite drink for an equal amount of sunflower oil.
“It came about because we just ran out of oil in the kitchen and had to get creative,” said brewery manager Eric Hoffman.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there were shortages of sunflower oil on supermarket shelves. Some of them even sold it by the “ticket”, allowing each customer to buy a certain amount so that there would be enough for everyone.
“Finding oil is very difficult … If you need 30 liters a week but only get 15, at some point you can’t fry schnitzels anymore,” said Hoffmann, explaining that so far the brewery’s customers have exchanged about 400 liters. Many find the proposition tempting: a liter of beer costs about 7 euros in German beer halls, while a liter of sunflower oil retails for 4.5 euros.
Moritz Baller bought 80 liters of sunflower oil when he was in Ukraine, on a trip to deliver humanitarian aid. He then exchanged the product for eight cases of beer for his birthday party. “This campaign is perfect. We can buy cheap beer and help the Giesinger Brewery at the same time,” he explained.
