Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has said he will vote for the unification of Albania and Kosovo if a referendum is held on the issue.
The comments came during an intergovernmental meeting between Albania and Kosovo in the town of Elbasan. Asked by the media about the possibility of a union, Rama said he would vote in favor and expects a referendum to be held in the future. He added that he does not know when it will happen and how.
Kurti said a referendum is part of a long process that is beyond the control of his government.
The Serbian government, as expected, reacted strongly, with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic declaring that it was “another stepping stone to undermining the foundations of regional stability and security”.
According to a survey by Euronews Albania, 80% of respondents are in favor of the union of the two countries.
During the meeting, the leaders also agreed to de facto remove the borders between the two countries. Agreements have been signed that will ease controls on goods transported across borders, abolish border controls on vehicles and implement five-year residence and work permits for citizens wishing to travel to any country.
University degrees will be recognized in both Kosovo and Albania, as will social security contributions. This will benefit those on maternity leave, long-term sick leave and invalidity pensions.
