Residents of the areas of England that fall under the red alert zone due to heat are being called on by scientists to stay at home, due to risks to the health and life of even non-vulnerable citizens.

The mercury is expected to hit 38C this afternoon in London. Already at 10 in the morning in Wilsey, Surrey in the south-east of England, the thermometer showed 30.2 degrees Celsius.

On Tuesday, the heat is expected to be even more intense, with a forecast of even 41 degrees Celsius in London.

The record temperature in modern UK history is 38.7 degrees Celsius in July 2019 at Cambridge Botanic Gardens.

From midday, a speed limit will come into effect on the trains.

Also, police in Northumberland announced that a child’s body had been recovered as part of the ongoing investigation into a 13-year-old who was swept away from the river where he had been diving to cool off.

As well as the red alert for extreme heat from the Met Office, the highest level of alert has been issued by the UK Health Protection Agency.

The government’s emergency coordination committee, known as Cobra, is expected to meet for the third time in recent days during the day.

As with the previous two, outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to be absent, who on Sunday hosted dozens of friends for a party at the prime minister’s official country home in Checkers.

His absence from the heat emergency management center drew sharp criticism from the opposition.
