A recent shooting in the United States killed four people and injured two after a man opened fire on an Indiana shopping street.
According to the police, the attack ended only when the “good Samaritan” shot and killed him.
One of the injured is a 12-year-old girl, but details of the other victims have not been released.
The incident at Greenwood Park Mall is the latest cataclysm in a country plagued by shootings, following a new report of a Texas school shooting that set police off.
Mark Myers, mayor of Greenwood, Indiana, confirmed in a statement that a shooting had occurred at a local shopping center in the city about 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Indianapolis, the capital.
Unidentified shooters enter the mall’s food court with a rifle and some ammunition around 6 pm local time (11:00 pm Greenwich Mean Time), according to Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison.
Confirming that the girl was among the injured, Izon added that no motive had been established.
“Four people were confirmed dead,” he explained, adding that there were a total of perpetrators.
Ison praised the intervention of armed bystanders in ending the attack, calling the 22-year-old a “good Samaritan.”
“The real hero of the day is a citizen who legally had a firearm in the food court and was able to stop the shooter almost immediately,” he said.
“It shocked us to the core. This is not what we’ve seen before in Greenwood,” the police chief continued.
“It’s absolutely terrifying.”
He added that the suspicious backpack was confiscated after it was found in the bathroom near the food court.
Authorities searched the mall for other victims, but Police Chief Chris Bailey said he believed the food court was involved in the shooting.
“We are fed up with another similar incident in our country,” he explained.
Other shoppers have evacuated from the mall.
According to the Archive of Gun Violence, the attack is the latest in a wave of gun violence that has plagued the United States, killing an estimated 40,000 people a year.

Recent atrocities included shooters who attacked a Fourth of July parade in a wealthy Chicago suburb, killing seven people and wounding at least three dozen.
The incident follows two massacres in May, when 10 black men were shot to death at a supermarket in upstate New York, and 19 children and two teachers were killed at an elementary school in Texas.
The recent spike in shootings has fueled an intense debate about gun control.
Later this week, the US House of Representatives will consider a bill that could ban offensive weapons for the first time in nearly 20 years.
