Britain: Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss the next tenant of Downing Street

The former Minister of Finance Rishi Sunak and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Liz Truss it will ultimately be the two candidates to succeed Boris Johnson who will fight to the end for the leadership of the Conservative Party and the UK Prime Ministership.

During the afternoon, last vote of the deputies of the Tories, Mr Sunack received 137 votes and Mrs. Trass 113 leaving former Defense Secretary Penny Mordant, who received 105 votes, out of the next phase of the succession race.

The two remaining candidates will now begin an election campaign by addressing the 160-200 thousand members of the Conservative Party which will choose the winner by mail vote during the summer. The next occupant of Number 10 Downing Street will be announced on September 5.

A televised debate between the two on the BBC is scheduled for next Monday. Pre-election events will follow with their participation in the regional bases of the Conservative Party.

As a basic borderline tax policy has been highlighted in what the two candidates promise. The 46-year-old Ms. Trass, considered a representative of the most right-wing wing of the party, is committed to an immediate tax cut imposed by Mr. Sunak as minister.

The 42-year-old Indian-born politician criticized Ms Truss for the pledge, saying taxes could not be cut before inflation, which was now pegged at 9.4% in June, a 40-year high, was reined in.

The most recent poll among members of the Conservative Party showed that in a “run-off” between them Ms Truss would prevail over Mr Sunak. This brought her from Tuesday night to the first place of the bookmakers’ predictions.
