Three more cases of Omicron in Scotland – New measures in force in England

by

London, Thanassis Gavos

Three new cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus were announced this morning in Scotland by the local Ministry of Health.

A total of nine cases have now been identified in Scotland and a total of 14 in the United Kingdom, along with five in England.

The head of the UK Health and Safety Service, Dr Jenny Harris, said this morning that ten “extremely likely” Omicron cases had been identified and further being analyzed in England.

However, he noted that there is no significant increase in the variation in the country, as for the time being in Omicron there is one in a thousand confirmed cases.

In the meantime, new measures against the spread of Omicron in England have come into force since this morning.

In particular, the mandatory use of the mask has returned to public transport and retail stores, but not to restaurants.

At the same time, visitors from abroad must now undergo a molecular diagnostic test of PCR type by the end of the second day of arrival and remain in isolation until they receive a negative result.

The exemption from the ten-day isolation for fully vaccinated people who come in contact with an Omicron body has also ceased to apply.

In a morning post on Twitter, Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the measures as “proportionate and responsible”, adding that they give scientists time to tackle the new variant. “Vaccines and boosters remain our best line of defense,” Johnson said.

The British Prime Ministers will give a press conference in the late afternoon on the occasion of the resumption of the measures, where he is expected to aim at the administration of 3.5 million commemorative doses every week.

The measures will have been debated and voted on in the House of Commons, with some members of the ruling Conservative Party reacting to the new “restriction of freedoms”, as they describe the obligation to use a mask.
