Volodymyr Zelensky reported that three people died in a Russian shelling in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine, on Thursday.

Ukraine’s military has the ability to strengthen its position on the battlefield and inflict heavy losses on Russian invaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said after a meeting with senior commanders of his country’s armed forces.

In a teleconference held late Thursday night, Zelensky said among other things that the supply of modern weapons systems was discussed, stressing that attacks against Russian forces must be stepped up.

“We agreed that our forces have the capabilities to make progress on the battlefield and inflict new significant losses on the invaders,” the Ukrainian president said.

Kyiv hopes that weapons systems from the West, and in particular long-range missiles, such as the American HIMARS deployed in recent weeks by the Ukrainian military, will allow it to launch a counterattack and recapture territory.

Russian forces are expected to temporarily suspend operations in the coming weeks, giving Kyiv a prime opportunity to strike back, according to Britain’s intelligence chief.

Volodymyr Zelensky reported that three people died in a Russian shelling in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine, on Thursday.

“Each of these Russian attacks reinforces Ukraine’s position to call for more HIMARS and other modern and effective weapon systems. Each of these attacks only strengthens our desire to defeat the aggressors, and this will certainly happen,” the Ukrainian president said.
