London condemns the “heinous” attack on the Ukrainian port of Odessa
Britain today condemned the “heinous” attack on the Ukrainian port of Odessa, the day after a deal was signed by Russia and Ukraine to resume grain exports via the Black Sea.
“It is absolutely appalling that just one day after this agreement,” Russian President “Vladimir Putin launched a completely unjustified attack on Odessa,” said Secretary of State Liz Truss.
“This shows that we cannot trust a word of what he says,” she added during a trip as part of her campaign to succeed Boris Johnson, “and we must urgently work with our international partners to find a another way to export the grain from Ukraine without involving Russia and its broken promises”.
Members of Britain’s Conservative party are expected to vote on September 5 to decide who — Liz Truss or former finance minister Rishi Sunak — will be the next leader of the government.
Turkey’s concern over the Russian attack on the port of Odessa
Turkey says it is “concerned” about the Russian attack on the Ukrainian port of Odessa, a day after the signing in Istanbul by Kyiv and Moscow of the agreement on the resumption of Ukrainian grain exports.
“The fact that such an incident happened right after the agreement we signed yesterday (…) really worries us,” Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said.
The Turkish minister called on all parties to continue cooperation within the framework of the agreement on the export of grains.
Hulusi Akar added that Moscow told him it had nothing to do with the attack in Odessa.
“In our contact with Russia, the Russians told us that they have absolutely nothing to do with this attack and that they are examining the issue very closely and in detail,” the Turkish Defense Minister said in his announcement.
