Several Americans have volunteered to fight alongside Ukrainian forces, ignoring Washington’s warnings.

Two American citizens were recently killed in the Donbas region, in eastern Ukraine, as reported by the American network CNN citing a State Department representative.

The spokesman, who was not named, did not provide further details about the victims or the circumstances in which they died, according to the same source.

He said, however, that the US government had contacted the families of the victims and offered all possible consular assistance. “Out of respect for (the victims’) families at this difficult time, we have nothing further to add,” a State Department spokesman said, according to CNN.

The Reuters agency points out that the State Department did not respond to its request (via e-mail) for comment.

The Russian army invaded Ukraine almost five months ago, with Russia speaking of a “special military operation” aimed at “demilitarizing” and “de-Naziizing” its neighboring country. Kyiv and the West stress that Moscow started an unprovoked war.

Several Americans have volunteered to fight alongside Ukrainian forces, ignoring Washington’s warnings. An American citizen, who had joined the ranks of foreign volunteer fighters, was killed in a battle last May, trying to help Ukrainians repel Russian invaders.
