Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration with European leaders and complained about the lack of more incisive support from NATO, the US-led military alliance, to Kiev during the war against Russia.
“I’m sorry that NATO didn’t listen to us. NATO should have defended us, it should have treated us the same way it treats Sweden and Finland,” Zelenski said in an interview with TV Globo’s Fantástico, broadcast this Sunday (24). ).
Zelensky was referring to the two countries that ignored decades of neutrality and applied to join NATO. Earlier this month, the organization signed a protocol for Nordic nations to join once all parliaments of member countries ratify the decision.
“I have been trying for three years, through diplomacy, to find a way to negotiate and reach an understanding with the Russian Federation. With the help of dozens of leaders from Europe and the world, I proposed several meetings with the president [Vladimir] Putin, to find solutions to this issue [Otan]”, Zelensky said. “One day, after convincing all the European leaders that they [Rússia] they were never going to invade Ukraine, they just did.”
Currently, one of the biggest problems facing Kiev in the war is the fatigue of the West, according to the Ukrainian president. He said, however, that he understood the situation. “All countries have their internal themes. But it’s important for us that people don’t get tired,” he said.
When asked what has been the most difficult so far, the Ukrainian president recalled civilian casualties and families who lost children. “The hope is that the deaths were not in vain.”
“I think Russia will regret later, historically, about everything they did to us. And no one will forgive them.”
