Two caretakers overwhelmed a 91-year-old woman and stole a World War I medal from a dementia patient in a ruthless kidnapping.
A “sneaky” couple broke into the first victim’s vault overnight and stole £10,000 worth of jewelery bought by her late husband.
Kirsty Wallis, 35, and Angela Lawrence, 48, used bank cards to buy chocolate and wine.
A Careat Home brand house was robbed on Gladys Spratt around 2 a.m. in October 2019.
When they woke up, the couple said the police had asked them to do an unscheduled check after the neighborhood turmoil.
No jewelery was found, but investigators discovered that Wallis soon received £150 worth of scrap metal from a gold and silver dealer.
Police later found in Wallis’s car a receipt from another patient’s antique shop for medals, coins and cutlery sold for £45.
Eric Benson, the man whose inheritance he stole, died before he could see the thief who took them from his court house.
They were jailed at Canterbury Criminal Court last week for robbery and larceny for nearly four years.
Eric’s niece, Christine, told the court in a statement about the impact on the victims:
“Our memory of him now has an idea of this crime.”
Judge Catherine Brown ordered the thief to look her in the eye as she made her final speech after refusing to be recognized by the victim’s family in court.
He told the defendant: “A lot of older people are really worried about having to bring strangers home, and crimes like this are just anxious crimes.
“This was a sneaky and ruthless crime against two elderly and vulnerable people.”
Ian Bond, who relieves Wallis, claimed he was sorry, pleaded guilty early and described his actions as “disgusting”.
Lawrence Kelly Waite’s relief said the defendant had “great embarrassment” and otherwise considered him an “honest and law-abiding citizen”.
PC Adam Pope, a Kent Police investigator, said after the hearing: ..
“I would like to commend the vigilance of the victims who woke up in the middle of the night and helped bring these criminals to justice.
“Kent Police take theft very seriously and detectives are carrying out all investigations to bring the thief to justice.”
