Von der Leyen: With the gas deal we are dealing with Putin’s blackmail

by

The President of the Commission says that the political agreement reached by the Council in record time will ensure a smooth and coordinated reduction in natural gas consumption across the EU in preparation for the coming winter.

“The EU did one decisive step to face her Putin’s threat of complete gas cutoff. I warmly welcome the adoption by the Council of the Council Regulation on coordinated measures to reduce the demand for natural gas” he emphasizes the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyenafter reaching a political agreement to reduce energy demand.

He adds that “the political agreement reached by the Council in record time, based on the Commission’s proposal ‘Save gas for a safe winter’ tabled last week, will ensure a smooth and coordinated reduction in gas consumption across the EU to prepare for the coming winter. It complements all other actions taken to date under REPowerEU, in particular to diversify sources of natural gas supply, accelerate the development of renewables and energy efficiency.”

Additionally, the President of the Commission states that “the collective commitment to a 15% reduction is very important and will help meet our storage needs ahead of winter”.

“Furthermore, the ability to declare a state of alert in the EU that causes mandatory reductions in gas consumption in Member States provides a strong signal that the EU will do what is necessary to ensure the security of its supply and protect its consumers, whether for households or for industry” he notes.

“By acting together to reduce gas demand, taking into account all relevant national specificities, the EU has secured the strong foundations for the necessary solidarity among member states against Putin’s energy blackmail. Gazprom’s announcement that it is further reducing gas deliveries to Europe via Nord Stream 1, without justifiable technical reason, further demonstrates Russia’s unreliable nature as an energy supplier. Thanks to today’s decision, we are now ready to tackle our energy security on a European scale, as a Union” concludes Ms von der Leyen.
