A district official later confirmed that six people were killed and 18 others wounded in a twin bombing in the town of Afgoge, a few kilometers away. He said two landmines were detonated minutes apart in a busy market, pointing out that the second blast was intended to cause bloodshed during the ongoing rescue operation.
Afkoge is visited every Wednesday by a large number of breeders to buy animals.
Al-Shabaab fighters have stepped up their attacks in recent months as government forces struggle to locate and destroy cells of the jihadist organization in various parts of Somalia.
