Nadine Dorries had to drastically shorten the live interview when the off-camera line broke out on Sky News.
Kay Burley was interviewing Birmingham’s Culture Secretary for a federal game when it all started.
“I’m sorry, Kay, the government…I think we have to go now,” Mrs. Doris said, fingering the receiver anxiously.
He then told the studio host, “The operator has some problems.”
I heard a man scream. You can’t because they arrest you for assault. “
Mrs. Doris said, “I won’t touch you,” and the man replied, “Madame can’t touch me, in what way can’t she touch me?”
“He can’t, I’ll lock him in the apartment in 5 seconds.”
The Conservative MP appeared to be on the lookout for security interventions, claiming “the cameraman didn’t touch him”, then asked if he should leave.
At one point he looks at the cameraman and asks, “Are you okay?”
The disturbing exchange shocked local viewers who questioned the apparent lack of confidence surrounding the high-profile minister.
The Tory campaign tweeted. “Given the aggression of the situation, the question behind the camera is why isn’t there better security? #CommonwealthGames2022 While the ministers do a live public interview? “
Ms Doris later stated: “Today started with a media roundup event, but you can come here for the Commonwealth Games here in Birmingham to see how £600m government investment has had an incredible impact on cities. and territories. I am very happy to be able to do it.
“Fantastic atmosphere. I’m looking forward to tonight’s opening ceremony!”
