A fire in a high-rise building in the southeastern part of Moscow killed at least eight people overnight Thursday into Friday, Russian authorities said, adding that it broke out in an inn.
“According to preliminary information, eight people are dead and four others have been hospitalized,” the Investigative Committee, responsible for major criminal cases, said in a statement.

“The bars on the windows prevented people from being saved, this is the main cause of the deaths,” said Andrei Rumiantsev, interim head of Moscow’s emergency services, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
He explained that the inn’s fire alarm system was not working and that other safety violations had been reported in inspections of the store in 2019 and in June.

An investigation into “violation of security regulations” has begun, according to the Commission of Inquiry.
Russia is often plagued by fires and deadly gas leaks, either due to crumbling infrastructure or negligence.
