“Recalling the ambassador does not mean that we are closing the channels of communication with London,” Minsk stressed
Belarus recalled its ambassador to London today to protest the heavy sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom on Minsk for suppressing the opposition and supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement, Belarusian diplomacy said it had taken this measure in response to “unprecedented sanctions”, particularly against the Belarusian economy, clarifying that it would also reduce its staff in London.
“Recalling the ambassador does not mean that we close the channels of communication with London”however, he stressed.
The UK, like many Western countries, has imposed sanctions on the regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for its relentless crackdown on a massive protest movement in 2020 and 2021.
The West has imposed drastic new sanctions against Minsk after Russia’s attack on Ukraine which began on February 24, because the territory of Belarus is used as a rear guard base for Russian troops in Ukraine.
