Spain – Sanchez on heat and saving energy: Don’t wear ties

by

“I’d like you all to notice that I’m not wearing a tie,” Sanchez said at a press conference, adding that everyone can help save energy.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez today asked ministers, civil servants and private sector workers to stop wearing ties to beat the heat, as heat waves sweep across much of Europe, sharply increasing the use of energy-guzzling air conditioners.

“I’d like you all to notice that I’m not wearing a tie,” Sanchez said at a press conference, adding that everyone can help save energy.

High summer temperatures are straining power systems in Europe and heightening concern about the prospect of a drive to save more natural gas to have reserves in case the war in Ukraine causes further cuts in supplies from Russia.

The Spanish prime minister has announced that his government will announce next week emergency measures aimed at saving energy.

Currently, he said: “I have asked ministers, civil servants and I would also like to ask the private sector – if they have not already done so – not to wear ties when it is not necessary, because that is how we will contribute to the energy savings that are very important for our country”.
