Israel: 59-year-old Palestinian killed by Israeli army fire

by

The man, identified as Hussein Kawari and a resident of the village of Awarta, was hit at a checkpoint near Huwara, south of Nablus.

A 59-year-old Palestinian man succumbed to his injuries four days after being injured by Israeli army fire in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced today.

The man, identified as Hussein Kawari and a resident of the village of Awarta, was hit at a checkpoint near Huwara, south of Nablus.

Israeli forces, asked by AFP about the matter, said they fired on Tuesday at the man “who was approaching in the direction of a military position”, “in the absence of a reaction” from his side after the warning shots.

The military said it would investigate the circumstances of his death.

This man is “mentally disabled,” the mayor of Huahuara told AFP. “He used to pick up bottles and cans from the street and beg in that area.”

The Palestinian Wafa news agency cited the family of the deceased, which also stated that Kawarik had “mental disorders”.

At least 54 Palestinians have been killed since late March, mostly in the occupied West Bank, and were mostly fighters and ordinary civilians, such as Al Jazeera’s Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu ‘Akleh, while covering an Israeli operation in Jenin .

During the same period, 19 people — mostly Israeli civilians inside Israel — were killed, mostly in Palestinian attacks. Three Arab citizens of Israel who had carried out attacks were also killed.
