Sixteen people in a pickup truck, including children, died in Peru when the vehicle plunged down a 200-meter cliff, police said Sunday.
The accident happened yesterday Saturday on a road between Masamari and Puerto Ocopa, in an isolated area in Hunin District (central), in the jungle.
“The toll we have is 16 dead and one injured after the car plunged down a 200-meter cliff,” a police spokesman in Massamari told AFP.
The van was mostly occupied by farmers who were going “to work on their farms”, according to the same source. Among the bodies recovered by firefighters and police officers are those of children, women, the elderly and the driver.
Only one of the occupants survived. He is being treated for injuries in Hunin.
The authorities announced that they are conducting an investigation into the accident.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, with the main causes being the development of excessive speed, the bad condition of the road network, the lack of markings and controls by the authorities.
In February, a bus plunged into a cliff in Tayababa, in the north of the country, killing twenty people and injuring thirty others.
