Kremlin: Pelosi visit to Taiwan would bring US into conflict with Beijing

“We can’t say for sure right now whether she will go there or not, but everything about this tour and her possible visit to Taiwan is completely provocative,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The Kremlin warned the US today that an expected visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would put it on a collision course with China and stoke tensions in the region.

“We can’t say for sure right now whether or not she will go there, but everything about this tour and her possible visit to Taiwan is completely provocative,” a Kremlin spokesman told reporters. Dmitry Peskov.

Earlier, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, fired direct accusation against Washingtonthat it destabilizes the world.

“Washington is destabilizing the world. Not a single conflict has been settled in recent decades, but many have been provoked,” said the representative of Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova, on her Telegram account.

The remarks sound like a “return to sender” for Moscow, which Western countries, led by the United States, accuse of destabilizing after its invasion of Ukraine.

Pelosi this week began a tour of several Asian countries that risks escalating tensions between China and the United States over a visit to Taiwan that has not been confirmed but is seen as increasingly likely.

The Beijing it considers Taiwan a part of its territory that must be reunified, by force if necessary, and has repeatedly warned Washington against a visit by the high-ranking official which it would consider a major challenge.

Increasingly isolated on the international stage after its military intervention in Ukraine and suffering economically from Western sanctions, Russia is trying to reach out to China.

China has repeatedly warned Pelosi not to visit Taiwan, which it considers its territory.

Beijing says a possible visit by Pelosi would run counter to the one-China principle, which Washington has pledged to uphold.
