As persistent rains batter Kentucky, the Good Samaritan and first responders race to a flooded home to save the state’s elderly residents.
The man who rescued his 98-year-old grandmother from being trapped in her home with four feet of water rushing around him is being hailed as a hero.
A shocking photo shows 98-year-old Mae Anburgey sitting on a nearly submerged bed at her home in Whitesburg, Kentucky. Another local resident, Randy Paul, was driving for fuel when he met a “hero” who helped May and her family escape from her flooded home.
A dramatic video filmed by Paul and shared with CNN shows an unnamed man entering a home, banging on the front door and windows and forcing his way inside. About 30 minutes later, he helped the Amburgey family out of the house.
Missy Crovetti of Illinois told CNN that her surviving family includes her grandmother May Amberg, her uncle Larry Amberg and her brother Gregory Amberg. Everyone is safe now, Grandpa and Grandma are recovering in the hospital.
Footage from another heroic scene shows search and rescue teams airlifting an 83-year-old woman and her four family members.
The Kentucky National Guard has conducted some 700 air rescue operations since the flooding began Wednesday. At least 600 people have been rescued by boat, but it is even more imminent as the rains are falling at a record rate.
As the death toll from the disaster continues to rise, a video of a successful rescue effort during the worst flood in state history is a ray of hope for many.
Gov. Andy Beshear shared that the death toll had risen to 35 as of Monday afternoon.
“More grim news,” Beshear wrote on Twitter. “We have confirmed more deaths from flooding in eastern Kentucky. Our losses are now 35. Please pray for these families and the people lost.
Authorities expect the death toll to rise further on Monday as hundreds of people remain missing.
“We just don’t have a firm understanding of that. I wish we could, but there are a number of reasons why it’s almost impossible,” Beshear said. “But we don’t want to give false hope or false information.”
