Janet Young, known for the hits “The Joy Luck Club” and “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” is the fourth woman elected president of the motion picture industry’s top trades organization
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States elected the film producer Janet Young as its new president.
Janet Young, known for the hits “The Joy Luck Club” and “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” is the fourth woman to be elected president of the industry’s top trade organization, following Bette Davis, Faye Kanin and Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and the first of Asian descent.
Academy members vote on the Oscar winners each year, and the Academy recently opened the new Los Angeles Film Museum, which had been in the planning for decades.
In his statement, the managing director of the Academy, Bill Kramerparticularly praised Young’s work “in membership recruitment, administration, equity, diversity and inclusion.”
“I am thrilled that she is taking on the prestigious role of Academy president and look forward to working closely with her on our shared vision to serve our members and inspire the next generation of filmmakers.” reported Bill Cramer, among others.
THE Academy has faced a lot of controversy in recent years, including accusations of a lack of racial diversity.
Janet Young, 66, born in Queens, New York to Chinese immigrant parents, has worked with directors such as Oliver Stone and Kathryn Bigelow. A member of the Academy’s Producing Department since 2002, Young most recently served as vice chair of its board of directors.
Young succeeds David Rubin, a casting director who served as president since his first election in 2019 but was forced off the board by term limits.
Janet Young will be the 36th president in the 95-year history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
