Germany is working together with its international partners for de-escalation in the Taiwan Strait, government spokesman Wolfgang Buchner said.
The German government clearly follows the “one China” policy, as does the US, the government spokesman said, referring to the tension that has built up around US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Berlin also condemned as ” unacceptable” the military threats and emphasized that he is working to de-escalate the tension.
“The German government has a policy of not commenting on the travels of officials from other countries. It is clear that it follows the clear ‘one China’ policy, like the US, nothing has changed in that,” government spokesman Wolfgang Buchner said earlier today in response to questions about whether the Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan poses a challenge to China.
“Germany is working together with its international partners for de-escalation in the Taiwan Strait,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Christopher Bürger, stressing at the same time that “military threats are unacceptable.” Germany maintains close relations with Taiwan, which is an important partner, Mr. Bürger added.
Yesterday from UN headquarters in New York, Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock said that “we do not accept international law being violated and a larger neighbor attacking a smaller neighbor in violation of international law – and of course that also applies to China.”
In response to Ms Burbock, the Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned the German ambassador to Beijing, Patricia Flor, and handed her a letter of protest. In a post on Twitter, the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for Europe spoke of the German minister’s “wrong comments” and called the Taiwan issue “China’s internal matter.”
However, the president of the German Wholesale, Export and Service Association (BGA) Dirk Iandura today expressed his concern about Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
“Today we in wholesale and foreign trade are concerned about the developments in the Pacific. Considering the current geopolitical instability, we think it would be more appropriate not to provoke. We do not need further escalation of the conflict and deterioration of economic relations between our two largest trading partners, the US and China,” said the BGA president.
