Glib is a professional soldier. He fought at Ilyich, was wounded, surrendered to the Russians, and through a prisoner exchange, considers himself lucky to have made it back to Kyiv.

He was captured by the Russians while being seriously injured at the Ilyich metallurgical factory in Mariupol.

Glip Trasko, a soldier in the 1st battalion of Ukrainian marines, describes to SKAI’s envoy, Chrysa Tsichli, the dramatic moments he experienced last April.

Glib is a professional soldier. He fought at Ilyich, was wounded, surrendered to the Russians, and through a prisoner exchange, considers himself lucky to have made it back to Kyiv.

“On April 10, a tank hit the building I was on the third floor of. A wall fell and crushed me. After that, they fired twice more with 120 mm shells and I was crushed by the debris. That’s how I got my serious injuries. It broke my pelvis, my jaw. I was wounded in the chest. I was temporarily blind and had a concussion. After my injury I was taken to a makeshift hospital, which was inside the Ilyich factory. I lay there for 2 days. Then our military doctors they said the factory is surrounded and they will hand us over to the Russians to save us,” he describes.

Glib, who was left without medical care, without communication with his family, remembers those moments in every detail.

“They didn’t give me any medical help. And a very important detail is that for the 16 days I was in captivity, I was without pain medication. I was not given any help for my injuries, for my broken pelvis, for my broken jaw, the broken my nose. Apart from the fact that knives were held against us to intimidate us, we were not tortured any more.”

From April 28th he was in various hospitals in Ukraine until July 28th. He was released from the hospital a few days ago and now has to come in regularly for check-ups and treatments.

On April 28, Kyiv and Moscow agreed to exchange 33 Ukrainian soldiers. Among them was Glib, who sends his own message.

“It is very important that foreign countries put pressure on Russia to return our prisoners.”
