Previously, a 10-meter-long humpback whale had been spotted in the great river
A beluga whale was spotted in the river Seinein northern France, as announced today by the authorities who asked citizens not to approach her, in order not to cause her increased stress.
The prefecture of Er, at Normandy, said in a statement that these whales — commonly found in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters, as well as the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec, Canada — sometimes drift further south and can temporarily survive in river waters. It is noted that efforts are being made to assess the health of the pilot whale.
At the end of last May, a seriously ill orca had become separated from its herd and swam dozens of kilometers away from the Seine estuary. Attempts to get it back to sea failed and the whale died of natural causes.
A month later, a 10-meter long minke whale was also spotted in the Seine.
